Data Encryption Makes Your Files Secure

July 23, 2007 By: Migo Software Category: Data Encryption

Firewalls. Internet security. Password protection. Each is a component of protecting your files. data encryption takes that security to the next level.

With Migo Software’s Digital Vault data encryption software, you can quickly and easily make sure that all of your important documents, files and information is secure.

The software will help to protect all of your vital information by encrypting files and adding password protection. You’ll be able to make secure backups of all of your data - whether music files or photos or other artistic projects that you are working on, important work documents or even emails - either on your PC or on a portable drive.

Speaking of email, you can even use Digital Vault to encrypt the email messages that you send so that you can be sure they are not intercepted along the way.

Different people have different reasons to look to data encryption, but their needs are often the same: a simple and effective way of keeping files secure. For many, Digital Vault is the solution they’ve been looking for.

Is Your Portable Drive Secure?

July 12, 2007 By: Migo Software Category: Data Encryption

Flash drives. Thumb drives. Portable hard drives. Media Storage. It seems like computing just wouldn’t be the same without them - and that’s most likely because it wouldn’t be.

Not everyone has a company laptop to take home at night, and portable storage drives are an easy way of taking a file home, making changes and then bringing it back to the office. A similar thing is true for students: though it’s increasingly common for students to need a laptop or computer of their own, many students still do their work in computer labs on campus or on a friend’s computer and need a way of backing up their files; portable drives make this possible.

But what about those files that you don’t want just anyone to be able to open? Whether your files contain information about a product that hasn’t yet been releases, important financial information and other calculations or just a term paper that you don’t want your roommates to copy and use as their own, you need to be able to keep your private files private.

That’s where Migo Software’s Digital Vault comes into play. With it, you’ll be able to encrypt your files and reopen them when you need them - but without the software, others won’t be able to access your data.

Portable storage makes it easy to carry your files with you. Unfortunately for some of us, portable storage can be - well, a little too easy to misplace. Encryption software makes it possible to keep your files safe - even if you misplace the drive. Why risk sharing sensitive information when you don’t have to?

What Is Data Encryption and Why You Might Need It

July 08, 2007 By: Migo Software Category: Data Encryption

Before you can look at why you might need to encrypt data files on your computer, it’s important to understand what data encryption is.

Data encryption is a means of hiding the text of your document so that those without knowledge of the code are unable to read the file. You can think of it like The DaVinci Code or even crypto-puzzles that are printed in your local newspaper. The key is that, though a message will be clear once the code is known, without cracking the reader will only have access to letters or numbers that just don’t make sense.

Data encryption is done using one of two methods: cryptography which creates a substitution code or key-based encryption which uses a string of characters to, in effect, lock and unlock the text (fortunately, with Digital Vault data encryption software you don’t need to come up with the codes and keys all on your own).

So why might you need Digital Vault data encryption software? Here are a few reasons:

  • If you’re working on business documents that contain trade secrets or proprietary information, you may want to encrypt the file - especially if you’ll be storing it on a company website or sending it via email to a colleague or virtual assistant
  • If you share a computer with a number of roommates and you don’t want to run the risk of a research paper being copied, it might not be a bad idea to encrypt the document so that there’s no risk of the file being used by someone else
  • Maybe your company is in the midst of talks about a merger; are you ready to let everyone know? If not, a data encryption program can help to ensure that only those who need to know the information are able to find it

Of course, you don’t need to be in one of these situations in order to benefit from data encryption. If you keep banking records or credit card statements on your PC, in these days of identity theft, well, you just can’t be too careful.

Mistakes Of Data Encryption

June 14, 2007 By: Migo Software Category: Data Encryption

Data encryption is everywhere. But there is a saying that data encryption is easy, but the key management is hard. There are many pitfalls when it comes to implementing data encryption. The first mistake is not using encryption when it is very easy to use. These include plain text protocols such as FTP and telnet. You could argue that people have abandoned these types of protocols for a host of other reasons, but the truth is that enough people are still using them.

Using HTTP for sensitive online transactions that involve credit cards and money transfers are also necessary for data encryption. This is especially so for e-commerce sites. If sensitive information is exposed then there could be a world of trouble. The risk of this is typically overshadowed by the risks of stored data. There really is no excuse to not use data encryption.

\Another mistake is that many businesses are not investing in data encryption software. They think it is tedious and hard work to install a data encryption program. This couldn’t be further from the truth. It is fairly easy to install a data encryption program.

Failing to correctly implement a data encryption program can open your system to all kinds of hacker attacks. Another mistake people make is making short cuts in the quality of cryptographic algorithm processes. These don’t depend on the secrecy but on the key or password. If you make the password or key available for the attackers then you’ve already lost the game. By embedding your password in a special code and then placing them in hidden files, you are still providing your secret password to attackers.

There are many hard coded secrets that have led to disasters when it comes to information security and data encryption. HD-DVD decryption is the most famous of these cases. The extensions of those kinds of errors, where there were hidden passwords or keys in files have actually helped the attackers to extend their total control over the networks involved. You can’t argue that system administrators really need to automate routine tasks. Root passwords in scripts and files that are configuration files should be as archaic as the double-digit years. Whether you have passwords in Javascript codes or ones that are downloaded by a web browser , it is still a good idea to think your data encryption program thoroughly through.

By using data encryption software you protect your computer and your data base by encrypting it. You implement an encryption algorithm, but the fourth mistake that people make is storing the keys within the data the is being encrypted. There are many big companies who sought to protect their credit card and bank statements in databases by encrypting their files along with the passwords and keys.

People claim that these things work, but they only work against low skill attackers. You need to implement data encryption correctly and the best way to do that is to get your hands on Data Encryption software that is easy to install and use. Then you can have peace of mind to make sure that your files are being protected. You need Digital Vault to encrypt all of your important files. When it comes to data encryption, have peace of mind and order Digital Vault before THEY get you!
