To Pay or Not to Pay - that is the question

March 09, 2007 By: Migo Software Category: Recover Lost Documents

Like it or not, it does take a great deal of effort to delete a file from a hard drive permanently - what actually happens in practice is that Windows simply changes the first character in the file name so the internal bookkeeping sysem no longer recognizes it - it is still there on the hard drive and will be kept there until it is overwritten by another file.

The trick with recovering a lost file or document is to act as quickly as you can - if the deletion is due to a hardware failure, virus infection or corruption of the file system - then recovery is best performed as soon as possible before the file is overwritten.

There are numerous file recovery programs on the market some free and some cost - bottom line is if you have a serious file recovery issue you will need to pay for the facility to recover a file.

A free alternative is Brian Kato’s Restoration utility while a leading file recovery tool is Stompsoft’s Recover LostData.
